West Virginia University Student Organization Sings Their Way Through School

Morgantown, WV – West Virginia University is home to hundreds of unique student organizations. Organizations big and small are working hard to make their presence known.

Take Me Home A Cappella is not just another name on the list of student organizations; they are a group of 21 amazing voices working in unison to create masterpieces. Kyle Moon, the club’s president, says he has found his second home among his fellow members.

Moon is a second-year member and has been with the group when it started with only five members. Since his freshman year, he has played a vital role in the establishment of Take Me Home A Cappella.

Moon and a fellow member wanted to create a more professional group, so they took the required steps toward achieving that goal.

“When I first found the a cappella group it was called Anarchappella and it was not an official WVU organization,” said Moon. “We wanted it to be more professional so we came up with the name Take Me Home A Cappella, and we just became an official group a month and a half ago.”

Now that the group is established, members have a mandatory practice every Wednesday night at the Lutheran Campus Chapel to prepare for their performances. At the end of each semester, they have a concert and they have been asked to sing at different events for the school.

“We are open to doing more than just the concert-we are open to doing more things at events or the National Anthem at games, that kind of thing,” said Moon.

The group chooses songs to fit their chosen theme for each semester. This semester is weather-themed, so the songs they have been working on are “It Will Rain,” “Walking on Sunshine,” and “Winter Wonderland.”

A cappella songs are incredibly difficult to create because each person has to fulfill all of the elements in the song. Moon does most of the beat boxing in the group, but he says he has sung with his family since he was “old enough to know what singing was.”

Moon had to become very versatile when he joined the group; he sang tenor, bass and learned how to beat box. “I throw myself in where I am needed. I like to think jack of all trades, master of none,” Moon said.

Moon describes singing as a way to bring people together and says this group has definitely done that.

“It’s not quite like the stereotype; it’s more like any other musical group. Not everyone can play an instrument, but with your voice it is something that you can control and everybody has [a voice],” Moon said.

Take Me Home A Cappella is just one example of the multitude of wonderful student organizations West Virginia University has to offer. The group continues to ensure that their presence will be known by creating pure music for all to hear.
